Talking to reporters at the city airport, Thirunavukkarasar, who had been a deputy speaker himself once in the distant past, said the whip can move disqualification notice against a member only for happenings inside the House.
Describing AIADMK whip S Rajendran’s disqualification petition issued to Speaker P Dhanapal as an act of intimidation, the TNCC chief said that he had been a deputy Speaker and the whip can move disqualification petition only for happenings inside the House and the MLAs were at liberty to comment on the government or the CM outside the Assembly.
In the instant case, the MLAs have expressed their lack of confidence in the chief minister outside the Assembly and they were free to air their views and it would not amount to violation of any order of the whip, Thirunavukkarasar remarked.
Echoing his views, former Assembly Speaker R Avudaiyappan told media persons in his native Tirunelveli that the attempts to disqualify the 19 rebel AIADMK MLAs would not hold water and the ruling dispensation was attempting to save the government at any cost.
Curiously, rumours are abuzz about the treasury benches trying to disqualify some DMK MLAs for reportedly ‘displaying’ some sachets in the House when the gutkha scam issue rocked the Assembly in the last held session.
However, DMK MLAs are confident that the government’s attempt to disqualify and save the government would not bear fruit as it was not legally tenable and it was a longdrawn process as well.
