Dumping of waste from Kerala: Coimbatore collector summoned

Justice N Kirubakaran, passing an interim order on a plea moved by S Ramaswamy of Chettypalayam, Coimbatore Taluk, said, “At least after media reports that chemical waste, e-waste, and medical waste from Kerala are illegally dumped into the border district at Tamil Nadu causing pollution, authorities should have acted upon. It seems The Tahsildar, Madukkarai Taluk, and the Executive Officer, Chettipalayam Town Panchayat, washed of their hands only by giving notice.”

“Such a trend has to be arrested. When a serious issue is raised which causes pollution and health hazard, the authority should act with responsibility. In this case the authorities have failed to act upon. Therefore, the District Collector, Coimbatore, is directed to appear before the court on August 31 at 10.30 am and file a report,” the judge said.

The petitioner had submitted that in the land adjacent to his residence there is a vacant land in which wastes creating an unpleasant odour are being dumped and a representation to the Tahsildar and district collector had failed to evoke any constructive response.
