Helping govt school teachers hone their English skills

R K Menon, Chairperson, Advanced Learning Institute (Asia), said that this training is open to one non-English subject teacher from per school. “In government or Corporation run schools or institutions run by religious or other organisations, there are times when there is no full time English teacher. Often, other subject teachers end up teaching English. We intend to ensure that at the base level, teachers know a good amount of English, so they can impart this to their students,” he said.

Through immersive and reflexive learning process, the workshop will also focus on kindling the level of interest in the students. “The workshop, which will be held in the evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm, will have lab sessions over the weekend. There will be discussions and focus on grammar rules and vocabulary building among students. The teacher, in turn, should kindle a level of interest in students. This can only happen if we make our sessions interesting,” added Menon. The workshop will also help teachers solve language problems, while also furthering the students interest in English. “The teacher could go back and, in turn, set up a small English library in the school in the future, perhaps? There are so many ways to kindle the interest in the language and the workshop will explore these methods,” concluded the chairperson.
