Kumbakonam, Kanniyakumari colleges declare holiday after clash on campuses

It is said that a girl studying in the second year was in love with Gurumurthy, a third-year student. But Aravindraj, a second-year student too was interested her. Both the boys used to frequently quarrel over being close to the girl. On Tuesday morning, what began as a verbal quarrel ended in a scuffle between them. Seeing them exchanging blows, friends gathered and took sides. The two groups began attacking each other, in which a few students including Gurumurthy and Aravindraj, sustained injuries. 

Teachers tried to pacify them, but in vain. A section of students began to pelt stones and broke the glass windows in the premises. 

The professors informed the Kumbakonam East police who brought the situation under control. Later, principal Seetharaman held talks with both the groups and suspended Gurumurthy and Aravindraj. 

Students of a private engineering college at Kanniyakumari clashed with their professors over a petty quarrel on Monday night. As the college, could not handle the situation, police personnel were stationed inside the college. 

Sources said that on Monday night a section of students returned to the college hostel in an inebriated state and were stopped by the warden who was also in an inebriated state. 

As the students were not allowed inside, they called out to other students for help and thus trouble began to brew.

When the staff joined together against the students, it angered them and they ransacked the college properties. College building, labs, college buses and vehicles of the staff were damaged by the students. Immediately Anjugramam police were informed and they reached the spot and brought the situation under control. 

Some of the students began to verbally abuse the police. Those who created a ruckus were secured by the police. However, as tension continued, the college was closed on Tuesday.

Anjugramam police are investigating the incident and are likely to book 29 students on Wednesday.
