CMC Vellore to become 1,000-bed citizen’s hospital

The 117-year-old CMC (Christian Medical College) hospital at Vellore will be converted into a 1,000-bed “Citizen’s Hospital” with the completion of the Rs 450 crore, super specialty hospital comprising 1,500 beds at Kannigapuram, 12 km from the town on the Chennai national highway, CMC’s outgoing director Dr Sunil Chandy Thomas said on Thursday.

“This would ensure that locals were given importance in hospital care as otherwise the increasing number of outsiders makes locals feel that they have no stake in the hospital despite it being located in Vellore” he added.

The Kannigapuram unit is expected to be completed in 2019. It will ensure that all hospital departments are shifted there as the present premises lack space for expansion.

“The proposed unit will include 500 quarters for hospital staff in phase 1 of construction. The entire unit which includes 4 phases is expected to reach fruition in 15-20 years depending on availability of funds,” Dr Chandy added.

When the unit is completed, the present 2,700 bed hospital will be downgraded to 1,000 beds with priority for locals. “Once completed, it will have the state-of-the-art facilities in all departments,” hospital sources revealed.

Change in guard: Incumbent CMC Vellore director Dr Sunil Chandy Thomas will hand over charge as director to Dr JV Peter this weekend.

Dr Chandy will return to his parent Cardiology department after completing the five year directorial stint, while Dr JV Peter from the critical care unit of the hospital’s department of medicine will take over formally in a couple of days.

Asked about his priority for the institution over the next five years, Dr Peter said that he would concentrate on sorting out the NEET imbroglio which resulted in the institution having to stop admissions to the MBBS course recently. “As the court is seized of the matter we are yet to hear the final word on the issue,” he said.
