Sources said that the temple is one of the 25 associate temples of Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and is governed by the HR&CE department. During the ongoing Navarathri festival, residents and temple authorities have displayed Kolu dolls inside the temple.
On Saturday, after the pujas, the temple priest had locked the gates. When he reopened it on Sunday morning, he was shocked to see the decorated doll of Goddess Andal burnt completely and the Kolu dolls on two racks damaged.
He alerted the residents of the HMS Colony and they lodged a complaint at the SS Colony police station. Police carried out investigations on the spot.
Sources in the Colony said that the compound wall of temple can be easily climbed over and the miscreants should have entered the premises only after 1 am on Sunday. It was also clear that the miscreants targeted only the well decorated Andal doll and torched it. They had also damaged other dolls on display in the rack.
