Stating that the overconsumption of antibiotics is dangerous, she said, “Most of the infections that occur are self-limited. Patient and doctor, must be patient and wait for the symptoms to dissolve. Antibiotics do not help in the faster resolution of these viral infections. Doctors must think before writing down a prescription for an antibiotic, as to whether it is required.”
Stressing on the need to educate doctors, pharmacists and public, she said even for common ailments of children, antibiotics are being prescribed which are not necessary. “While paediatricians are aware of the importance of the rational use of antibiotics, their attitude changes when they treat patients,” she stated, adding that every hospital should draw an antibiotic policy after analysing several case studies and in coordination with physicians, surgeons and microbiologists.
While doctors are urged to keep a check on the same, stress is also laid on ensuring that pharmacies refrain from selling these antibiotics across the counter. “Regulation is essential to keep a check on irrational sale of these drugs. While it is important to educate the pharmacists about the consequences of a patient consuming too many antibiotics, action must be taken against those who fail to comply,” said S Kumaran, a health activist.
