After resuming the sale in ‘Freedom Bazaar’ where products of inmates are being sold, the ADGP said, The prisons have been cultivating vegetables using organic method and the inmates find it very difficult to sell them to the public.

So the vegetables are being used for the food court run by the inmates with the support of prison staff. Similarly, the inmates are also making readymade dresses, furniture and other products, that are being sold at the Freedom Bazaar.

“The prison department has been encouraging the inmates to bring a change in their character and to help them lead a good life,” said the ADGP. Meanwhile, works on installing mobile jammers are under way. Equipment worth Rs 5 crore have been bought for it.

“Already, three jammers have been installed at Chennai and two at Coimbatore and one each in all other prisons,” the ADGP said. Sylendra Babu said, there are only 15,000 inmates lodged in prisons across the state, that could accommodate 22,000. “This shows that the crime rate has come down,” he pointed out.

Later, the ADGP redressed the grievances of the inmates and their relatives during the prison inmates welfare day. DIG (Prisons) Jayabarathi, Superintendent Nikila Nagendran and others were also present.
