The sudden departure raised many an eye brow since Governor Banwarilal Purohit who is already in Delhi, called on Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister Nitin Gadkari. Besides, a hearing by the Election Commission of India on claims for the ‘Two Leaves’ symbol and party was also deferred by the Commission.
Panneerselvam’s meeting with the PM assumes significance since the former had cancelled his scheduled programmes in the state and he is taking with him only those leaders who were with him during his split from the AIADMK. Former AIADMK minister KP Munusamy, MP V Maitreyan and advocate Manoj Pandian are accompanying him and the only outsider in the team is Minister P Thangamani. It is not known if Thangamani will be with Panneerselvam during the meeting with Narendra Modi.
However, functionaries from the ruling AIADMK denied the possibility of sudden and sweeping developments in the state politics since all the issues involving the state, including the demand for floor test and disqualification of MLAs are pending in court.
