There were several complaints of rash driving and overloading of vehicles. The police and the Transport Department tightened the vigil on the traffic violators in the Madurai region, which comprised Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts.

The police had nabbed several violators and recommended the RTOs to cancel their licences.

In September, Madurai police sent 11,014 recommendations of cancelling drivers’ licences and out of them 9,060 were cancelled after some careful analysis. The remaining 2,044 persons were warned and were asked to follow the traffic rules properly in future.

Out of the total 9,060 offenders, 3,386 persons had not used their helmets while driving. All of them were repeat offenders. Next in the list were those, who rode the vehicles while speaking on their mobile phones. As many as 1,925 licences were cancelled for the reason.

Similarly, 1,363 licences were cancelled for over speeding, 850 for drunken driving, 628 for carrying more persons in the share auto than the permitted limit, 486 for not stopping at the stop line, 410 for overloading and 12 for triple ride on the bikes.

V Balan, Joint Commissioner, Transport Department, Madurai Region, said, “People should follow traffic rules to safeguard themselves and to reduce accidents and make Madurai region an accident free region.”
