After the unfortunate demise of 8 TNSTC staff, the employees observed a strike from Friday and continued to it on Saturday. Due to the strike, residents of Sirkazhi, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Porayar areas were not able to move around and go about their business.
Though most of the employees returned on Saturday afternoon after taking part in the funeral of all the eight bus crew, who lost their lives in the roof collapse, they were dejected. They also organised a rally mourning the death of their colleagues.
They refused to operate the buses as they have not received any promising response from the government on the renovation or construction of new facility for the staff on the depot premises.
Later, the transport department officials held a peace talk with the agitating employees and assured to fulfill their demands.
Subsequently, out of the 36 buses in the depot, 29 were operated from Saturday evening.
Expressing solidarity with the Porayar crew, TNSTC employees in Tiruchy also convened a condolence meeting for the eight staff killed in the mishap.
They too struck work for two hours, which badly affected the commuters.
