According to patients admitted in the emergency maternity ward, the cement plasters from the roof collapsed at 6.30 am on Monday with a loud thud. When they looked around, they saw that a huge part of the ceiling (2 metre in diameter) had been ripped off the ceiling. As it came down menacingly, the nurses present there raised an alarm. Soon, relatives of the patients who had been waiting outside rushed inside the hall. They heaved a sigh of relief on seeing their family members safe and sound.

As it was early in the morning, there was less movement of people in the hall and no one was injured. It is said, women expecting delivery within 24 hours are admitted in the ward and they would be moved to the labour ward if they experienced labour pain.

The affected part of the ceiling is actually in the pathway to the labour ward. Luckily, as no one was in labour then, there was no causality, said hospital authorities, But, officials said that the building was built only in 2008 and was quite stable. Mayiladuthurai MLA Radhakrishnan visited the hospital and inspected the site.
