Justice N Kirubakaran while hearing a plea pertaining to unruly behaviour of the so-called advocates and the actions of some of the leaders of the bar and the mushrooming of law colleges, said, “It is very shocking to note that without even any formal education, people with criminal background are able to get law degree in absentia and are able to get enrolled as advocates. Because of these kinds of unruly elements, problems are created in police stations, in courts and wherever they go.”
On recording the submission made by Advocate General (AG) Vijay Narayan that 42 persons got enrolled as lawyers without furnishing any basic documents and without providing even any addresses, the Judge said, “Persons who have not even passed sixth or seventh standards are able to procure open University MA degrees and subsequently, the said degrees have been used to get admissions into law colleges and obtain law degrees.”
Observing that besides UGC regulations, legal education rules 2008 also prohibits the entry of Open University Degree holders, Justice Kirubakaran said, “It is surprising to note that the elected bar council members had allowed enrollment of 713 persons with open university M.A degree. It is open to the AG who is the ex-officio chairman to issue notice to those 713 candidates regarding cancellation.”
