Leaders make a beeline to Thevar memorial at Pasumpon to pay respects

The 110th Jayanti and 55th Guru Pooja for Muthuramalinga Thevar was celebrated peacefully at Pasumpon near Paramakudi in Ramanthapuram district, on Monday, thanks to the heavy deployment of police.

The 3-day celebrations commenced on Saturday with Yagasalai prayers. A continuous stream of people walked towards the memorial of Muthuramalinga Thevar with milk pots and Mulapari. On Monday, thousands of people visited the memorial and youngsters raised slogans about Thevar and took selfies with his statue.  Various thevar groups provided annadhanam to visitors. 

The memorial was visited by leaders of various parties and Thevar outfits from the morning. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, and many ministers garlanded the statue of Thevar at Goripalayam in Madurai and then proceeded to Pasumpon. At Pasumpon, they garlanded the statue of Muthuramalinga Thevar at his memorial.  

DMK working president, MK Stalin also paid respects to Muthuramalinga Thevar at Pasumpon. He was accompanied by MLAs and party functionaries from southern districts. Congress leader Su Thirunavukkarasar, MDMK leader, Vaiko, PMK leader, GK Mani, Tamil Maanila Congress leade, GK Vasan, BJP leader H Raja, and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishan paid respects at the memorial of Thevar. 

A huge crowd accompanied the AIADMK leader, TTV Dhinakaran, when he visited the memorial. They raised loud slogans when Dhinakaran paid respects to the statue Thevar. His supporters reportedly tore nearly 60 flex banners carrying the pictures of Edappadi K Palaniswami, and O Panneerselvam. Incident-free However, the entire Thevar Jayanthi celebrations were peaceful and incident-free. 

More than 7,000 policemen were deployed for the security. The vehicles were allowed only through the bypass road and not through the residential areas. Vehicles carrying the flags of various Thevar outfits were regulated by the police. Men travelling in private vehicles were not allowed to raise slogans. South Zone IG, Shailesh Kumar Yadav, inspected the security measures at the memorial. ADGP Vijayakumar who visited the spot also reviewed the security measures. 

Madurai airport will be named after Thevar: Stalin 

“The state government should take steps to name Madurai International Airport after Muthuramalingam Thevar. If the DMK comes to power, the airport would be named after Thevar”. said DMK working president, MK Stalin, here, on Monday. At Pasumpon, Stalin said that the state government is acting like a real estate broker and had allotted land for private companies like Adani. If government still continues to provide land the DMK would stage protests at Ramanathapuram, said Stalin. TTV Dhinakaran and Pon Radhakrishnan, also addressed the gathering.
