The good rainfall also ensured that the district’s’ three dams at Mordhana, Rajathoppu and Andiappanur continued to maintain their full tank levels (FTL), despite releasing water into their regular channels. The continuous rain – largely an intermittent drizzle – ensured that the district’s 519 irrigation tanks controlled by the Public Works Department (PWD, continued to see an increase in their water levels. While 112 tanks were brimming, another 47 had reached 75 per cent of their full capacity and another 59 were half full. The remaining 301 tanks have 25 per cent storage, which, officials are hopeful of increasing, as the North-East monsoon has only now set in.

Dip in Vellore-Chennai passengers

A continuous media barrage about rain laying havoc in Chennai city has resulted in bus services operated to Chennai from Vellore by the Villupuram based state transport corporation taking a beating on Saturday and Sunday. Even a day earlier, government transport corporation sources revealed that many services to Chennai plied with less than ten passengers, picking up more at Ranipet, Wallajahpet and Kaveripakkam. On Saturday, sources said even premium and TSS services failed to attract passengers leading to officials deciding to cut one or two services thereby ensuring that passengers were available for the other services. Conductors lamented that demands to show a minimum Rs.1500 collection was practically impossible due to the vehicles running empty. It was only passengers who arrived in Vellore from Chennai that the Corporation switched back to the regular time table.
