Heavy rains had soaked the front shade of the Mandapam Government Primary School at Sambai and it collapsed in the wee hours on Tuesday. Luckily, no one was injured.

When the news spread, the village people rushed to the school and informed the police and revenue officials. Karnan, former panchayat president of Sambai village, said that the school building was constructed in 1982. As the building was 35-years-old, they had demanded the government to shift the school to another building.

However, 18 months ago, Rs1 lakh was spent to spruce up the building but despite that it remained weak. So, they had petitioned the district administration on several occasions to shift the school to another building but their demand was not heeded to, said Karnan.

As many as 66 students, including 36 girl students, study in the school. Apart from other staff, three teachers work in the school.
