Unopened school building, haven for anti-socials
District politics has ensured that a new school building, constructed at a cost of Rs.1.30 crore at Minnur village in Madanur panchayat union, in Ambur taluk remained unopened for nearly a year, resulting in the building becoming a haven for anti-social elements.

The building was constructed for the existing government co-educational higher secondary school in the village, which was badly in need of a new building. School staff said, “We were all eager when the construction was completed and we expected to move in immediately. However, we do not know the reason why the facility has been unused for nearly one year.” Teachers fear that the building not being used might result in it being damaged by vagrants, as it sits right next to lush fields sans a compound wall. According to Yuvaraj, a local landlord donated over 1.20 acres to the school after Ambur AIADMK MLA P Balasubramani spoke to him about the need.
AIADMK sources revealed that local minister KC Veeramani not wanting Balasubramani to earn a good name – he was recently disqualified by assembly speaker P Dhanapal for switching allegiance to TTV Dinakaran’s camp – put the brakes on the building’s inauguration.
While Local Taxes Minister Veeramani was not available for comment, Education department sources said “the building would be opened soon.”
The one-storey building has a ramp for differently abled but non use has resulted in antisocials using it for drinking sprees at night. The corridor abutting classrooms is full of filth - both human and animal.
“If continued pleas to open and use the building are not heeded soon, locals plan to open the building themselves” said a school staffer.
