Melur ryots get Vaigai water for single crop

Farmers of Melur and Tirumangalam region, here were more than happy on Tuesday as their efforts to get water for the single crop paid off with the government releasing over 900 cusecs.

Following the announcement of the Chief Minister, Revenue Minister RB Udayakumar, and Madurai Collector K Veera Raghava Rao, along with PWD officials opened 700 cusecs of water from Kallandiri check dam. They offered prayers and paid floral tribute. The water released from Kallandhiri check dam would reach Periyar main canal and help irrigation of the single crop in Melur region. 

Following that, the Minister and officials went to Peranai check dam and released 200 cusecs of water, which would join Thirumangalam main channel and irrigate crops in Thirumangalam region. In total 76,287 acres of land would be benefited from the released water.

More than 5,000 farmers of Melur region staged a road roko on Monday for close to six hours on the Madurai-Chennai national highways road demanding water in the Periyar main canal for crops of Melur region. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, responded to their protest by agreeing to release excess water from the Vaigai dam. 

The released water would be supplied till November 27, according to a release from the office of the Chief Minister. Now, a total of 1,800 cusecs of water is released from Vaigai dam for cultivation. Earlier, on November 1, as much as 900 cusecs of water was released from Vaigai dam by Deputy Chief Minister, O Panneerselvam.
