Karunas wants government to go tough on usurers

Tiruvadanai MLA and actor S Karunas on Wednesday raised the issue of usury with government and urged to try the suspect Anbuchezhian under the Supreme Court guidelines issued in this regard.

Speaking to DT Next, the legislator said that the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act 2003 was enacted by the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to ensure that no other life should be lost due to usury and to rein in usurers, when film producer G Venkateswaran alias GV committed suicide in May 2003. 

“The special legislation must be used effectively by the state and should not allow Anbuchezhian to evade the law as it had happened earlier,” he said. 

Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar assured that usurers will be dealt with under the stringent law and appealed to the affected people to approach the police.
