Having demanded a spectacle free vision, she was given the option of extended range of vision lens, which do not need a precise centration, a critical issue with other multifocal lenses. Post implantation, she now has crystal clear vision, which is rare after cataract affects people.

When diagnosed with cataract, she did not for once think that her career was doomed. “Given the emergent technological innovations in the field of cataract, she found a solution that didn’t even require her to wear spectacles,” said Dr Mohan Rajan, Chairman and Managing Director of Rajan Eye Care, where she was treated. “When she was diagnosed with cataract, she was apprehensive of finding a solution that could provide her seamless vision. She wished to return to her old self post-surgery, and demanded spectacle free vision. Monofocal lens implants were opted out, and instead the extended range of vision lens was chosen as it provided good vision for distance, intermediate and near, without the loss of quality of vision as seen with other multifocal intraocular lens,” he added.

While blindness is a major healthcare concern in India with over 80 lakh people affected by it, around 62 per cent are suffering vision loss due to cataract, the need for awareness to be created about the fact that cataract is treatable is the need of the hour, said Dr Lakshmi M, an Ophthalmologist. “Cataract operation is one of the safest surgeries in the world. With the growing desires of leading an independent and active life, vision loss due to cataract at any age comes as a big impediment to hopes of people. However, with modern advancement in IOLs, patients have many alternatives,” she added.
