Rahul reached Tiruvananthapuram and came to Chinnathurai village in Kanniyakumari by road on Thursday.
He addressed the families of fishermen, who had either died or missing in Cyclone Ochki. He consoled the grieving kin one by one and assured them that he would do his best.
Rahul also met the farmers affected by the cyclone and shook hands with the residents gathered in front of St Jude’s church in the village.
Addressing the crowd, the Congress presidentelect said he wanted to visit the cyclone ravaged areas immediately after the impact, but the hectic election campaign in Gujarat, planned well ahead, kept him busy. “I apologise for the delay,” he said.
He also said that fishermen and farmers face a difficult time. Highlighting the need for a separate ministry to handle the issues pertaining to fishermen, Rahul asked, “Where will the fishermen turn into when in distress?”
“Though we are not in power at the Centre and state, our position as Opposition party too is powerful.
The Congress will put pressure on the Union government with all its might to fulfill the demands of the fishermen to form a separate ministry for them,” Rahul added.
