Tiruchy city gets first open-air gym, micro compost yard

Concerned about the health of residents, Tiruchy civic body opened an open air road side gym at a cost of Rs 25 lakh, on Monday. This concept has been copied by the civic body from Delhi model. Based on the response, the number of gyms, which is free for the public, would be increased, said Corporation Commissioner N Ravichandran.

Inaugurated by the Commissioner of Municipal Administration G Prakash, the gym has facilities for aerobics, weight training and so on. Despite the concept being the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, the people’s response is awaited and based on requirement, it would be expanded across zones. Meanwhile, Prakash also inaugurated an auto-flush urinal toilet complex near the Central Bus Station in Tiruchy. 

Built at a cost of Rs 5 lakh, it has five urinals including one for differently-abled. Officials said that they are planning to build more such toilet complexes depending on the requirement. 

Micro compost yard 

As Tiruchy City Corporation has been a front runner in establishing and maintaining a Micro Composting Yard, civic bodies across the state held an on-site workshop here on Monday. So far, 23 yards are functioning in the city and 47 on site yards are being maintained by private parties which have boosted the image of prompt waste management in the City. 

The Commissioner of Municipal Administration (CMA) Prakash inaugurated a new micro-compost yard near Ayyalamman Padithurai in ward 9 in Srirangam zone at a cost of Rs 56.6 lakh. The yard will process waste from residents in at least 4426 households in 44 streets. The yard is expected to process a waste of at least 7425 metric tonnes. With the new yard, total number of micro-compost yards has increased to 23 in the city while the onsite yards have been increased to 47. 

Officials from 33 civic bodies, including four corporations, on Monday visited the micro-compost yards maintained by the civic body. While an onsite training programme was given to as many as 189 officials aiming at replicating such micro compost centres in other civic bodies since they can help avoid the need for massive compost yards.   

The programme was held as instructed by commissioner of municipal administration Prakash. Later, there was a power point presentation on the working of the micro compost centres.
