According to sources, a private school was conducting the sports day on the CMC playground at Bagayam on Tiruvannamalai Road. Ganapathy, who used to fly helium balloons for special occasions, was called in to hoist a special balloon for the event. When he was filling the balloon with helium from a cylinder, it suddenly burst. In the impact, a portion of the cylinder got ripped off and hit Jithesh, who was standing nearly 100 metres away. The boy was killed on the spot.

Navin, who was also hit by the debris, suffered serious injuries. Another portion of the cylinder landed on the CMC hospital compound located opposite the venue. Navin was admitted to the CMC hospital. Bagayam police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for Ganapathy, who went into hiding after the incident.
