The police in the union territory had arrested the suspect Thierry Gagner, 66, based on a complaint from the Child Welfare Committee, which raided the premises and found reasons to suspect paedophilia.
The officials who undertook the inspection also suspect he was planning to escape to France. As soon as he came to know that the complaint against him was being taken up for investigation, Gagner got himself admitted to a hospital.
“However, he was sent to jail after the police recorded his arrest,” sources said. The victim hailed from Orissa and was living in Gagner’s house in Krishna Nagar with her mother, brother and two sisters. According to police, the victim girl was staying in the Frenchman’s room, while the mother and the other three children shared the roof but in different rooms.
Ganger, however, had told the police that he had adopted her as his daughter. Gagner, who has been working as a director of the French NGO, Hopigo and Missions Humanitaires, was allegedly sexually exploiting the girl, now aged 12, for the last four years. He has been booked under Section 10 of POCSO Act, said officials. The victim was sent for medical examination after recording her statement, and was sent to government home. Other members of her family, too, have been taken to another place to stay.
