While the crops which had been cultivated across the Delta districts have started withering, the farmers have been staging a series of protests seeking water from Karnataka to save the standing crops. But the farmers were clueless if they would get water from Karnataka.
Subsequently, Puliyur A Nagarajan, state president of TMC (Farmers wing), sought clarification from the Cauvery Technical Cell and the CM’s Special Cell.
On Wednesday, R Subramanian, chairman of Cauvery Technical Cell, replied to Nagarajan that water from Karnataka was released based on the turn system as per inflow and storage.
The Karnataka government has clarified to the Cauvery tribunal that its four major reservoirs have less storage compared to previous years and appealed to it to declare 2018 as a year of drought. It had also said the present quantum of water has been stored to be used during the summer. “This clearly states that Karnataka may not release water for Tamil Nadu citing various reasons,” it said.
