‘Book Srivilliputhur Jeeyar if offence is made out’

The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Namakkal police to register a case on Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam’s (DVK) complaint against Srivilliputhur Sadagoba Ramanuja Jeeyar for his ‘soda bottle’ comment, if a cognisable offence is made out.

Justice MS Ramesh was passing orders on the petition filed by Vairavel, Namakkal district organizer of the DVK, seeking to register a case on the complaint made by him against the Jeeyar for his speech stating that they also know how to hurl soda bottles. The issue pertains to an article penned by Vairamuthu published in a Tamil daily in which he allegedly referred to Andal as a devadasi.

Subsequently, while addressing a meeting organised by Maadhorubaagan Iraipani Mandram to condemn the writer on January 26, the Jeeyar allegedly said, “The saints had kept their silence all these days. We will not keep mum anymore.

We all know how to hurl soda bottles.” Claiming that the Jeeyar’s speech could instigate violence in the state, the plea noted that a complaint to the inspector of police, Thiruchengodu station, seeking appropriate action against the Jeeyar had failed to evoke any response.

The petitioner wanted the court to step in and direct the jurisdictional police to file an FIR against the Jeeyar for the alleged criminal offence committed by him.
