After usury threat, shop owner posts pic on FB, ends life

A textile shop owner ended his life due to ‘kandhuvatti’ menace after posting a picture of him with a noose around his neck on Facebook, in Omalur near Salem on Saturday night.

According to police, C Murugan, 34, of Semmandapatty near Omalur had borrowed money from several persons. But, he couldn’t repay due to business losses. 

As the lenders threatened him, Murugan decided to kill himself. Before taking the extreme step, Murugan took a photograph of him with a noose around his neck and posted it on his facebook account. He then hung himself near a temple at Karuvalli in Omalur. 

Theevattipatty police rushed to the spot and sent Murugan’s body to the Salem GH for autopsy. In his suicide note, Murugan claimed to have taken loans running into several lakhs. 

“Despite paying a high interest, the lenders kept threatening me demanding more. They also took away jewellery and clothes from my shop. I am ending my life depressed and unable to bear their harassment,” he said in the suicide note.
