Sources said, P Ilanthendral (3), daughter of Prabhu of Puduppadayur was playing in front of her house on Tuesday morning. Suddenly, a stray dog that was running through the street bit the toddler.

On hearing the cries of the child, her father Prabhu, a teacher in a private school in nearby Chozhanmaligai and his wife Ilavarasi, rescued the child. The 3-year-old child, which suffered a big injury on the right side of the chest in the dog bite, was rushed to Kumbakonam Government hospital where she was vaccinated for rabies.

The stray dog later ran to the nearby Manappadayur village and bit Kavya (4), daughter of Ramki, in her forehead and then attacked Silambarasan (10) son of Suresh. These two children were also rushed to the Kumbakonam government hospital.

Unconfirmed reports said the same dog also bit two more kids from Sundaraperumalkoil village. Panicked by the dog’s biting spree, residents of the several areas appealed to the district administration to take steps to catch the dog to avoid further victims.

Later, the Kumbakonam sanitary staff launched a hunt for the dog.
