Plan to set up roof gardens in government buildings
Minister for Municipal Administration SP Velumani and Minister for Fisheries D Jayakumar on Thursday inaugurated a seminar on terrace gardening, organised by Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women and Annai Teresa Women’s College to mark International Women’s Day, even as there is a plan to set up terrace gardens in government buildings.

As many as 120 women were given training in the nuances of setting up a terrace garden, to utilise the rooftop spaces, which could potentially increase the city’s green quotient. In addition, terrace gardens will be set up in the Collector’s Office in Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari, to promote this concept. Self-help groups (SHGs) too could take this up for a greener tomorrow, stated an official release, as Tamil Nadu has 6.3 lakh SHGs with 95.02 lakh members.
An increasing number of women are being trained in new methods of agriculture to increase the yield. In 166 panchayats across Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur and Villupuram districts, 16,800 farmers were identified and 14,800 have been trained during this three-year scheme taken up at an approximate cost of Rs 15.96 crores. This will be extended to other districts soon.
On Women’s Day, the ministers highlighted the Amma Scooter scheme, which received a massive response across Tamil Nadu, as 1 lakh Amma Scooters will be provided. 3.36 lakh applications were received so far, and 14,891 applications have been approved and the subsidy provided for 3,475 applications.
In areas of sanitation, 45 lakh toilets were built in individual homes in rural areas and 3,83, 265 built in urban areas. 12.83 lakh toilets are being constructed.
