The adult tusker, aged around 45, was found dead in a revenue land at a pumpkin farm, roughly a km away from the Boluvampatti forests.

The tusker, which ventured out of the forest on Tuesday night, had attempted to cross over a three-foot high electric fence erected around a pumpkin farm owned by one Chandran.

“It suffered a shock and died on the spot. Overnight rains also aggravated the impact of the shock on the animal,” said a forest department staff. Following the incident, farm owner Chandran had gone into hiding.

A team of forest department personnel, led by M Senthil Kumar, Madukkarai forest ranger, inspected the spot and held inquiries. A post mortem was done on the animal by veterinarian NS Manoharan.

A preliminary post mortem report revealed that the jumbo had died of electrocution. Vital organs, including heart of the animal stopped functioning due to the electric shock. However, organs of the animal were harvested and sent for a lab analysis, said Senthil Kumar. Meanwhile, Tangedco officials, who visited the spot, said that the farmer had diverted electricity supplied to his farm to the fence. The carcass of the animal was buried at a nearby place after removing its tusks. A search is on to nab the farm owner, who is on the run.
