Class 10 board exams begin on a tough note
Several Class 10 students, belonging to the last batch of over nine lakh students before the current syllabus changes, had a tough start to their board examinations on Friday.

Students claimed that the Tamil language question paper was tough and many questions, especially the one-word type, were difficult. “It was as if questions were set on CBSE pattern.
The one-word answers were tough to attend, as they were not from the allotted subject,” said P M Logesh, a student of a private matriculation school at Pallikaranai.
According to him, many students wasted a lot of time attending questions 26, 32 and 36, which he alleged were twisted.
“Many questions were not straightforward. We had to spend more time to understand the question and answer it,” added S Kaplana, a student of a government higher secondary school near Pallavaram. The students will have four days leave before attending language two paper on March 21.
The examinations will go on till April 20. In a bid to ensure that there were no malpractices, around 6,900 flying squads and standing squads monitored the examination proceedings during the day. Special observers also visited various examination venues to oversee the proceedings.
Apart from 9.6 lakh students, more than 30,000 private candidates are also taking up Class 10 exams this year. In order to shorten the travelling distance of students, the Directorate of School Examinations have added 237 exam centres across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Meanwhile, the CBSE Class 10 students, who wrote science theory exam on Friday, said that the paper was easy, and questions were from within the curriculum.
“Though certain portion of Chemistry section was a bit hard, rest of the paper was easy,” said M Karthik, a student. The next examinations for CBSE Class 10 will be held on March 19. Likewise, CBSE Class 12 students will have their examinations on the same day.
53 prisoners take exam
Fifty-three prisoners in Puzhal prison wrote the Tamil one paper of the SSLC exam that began on Friday. Among them, three are writing the paper again since they didn’t make it in their previous attempt. While 56 persons were supposed to write the exam, three did not appear for health reasons. The inmates included eight women - three from Puzhal and five from Vellore. Puzhal prisons Superintendent Murugesan handed over the question paper to the examinees and wished them success in the exam. While 23 of them are lodged in Puzhal prison, the rest were brought from Vellore, Poonamallee and Cuddalore prisons to write the SSLC exam.
6096 Corporation school students appear
As many as 6,096 students studying in 70 schools under the Greater Chennai Corporation appeared for the Class 10 board examinations on Friday. A press release by the civic body stated that 2,878 boys and 3,218 girls sat for the examinations in 20 centres across the city. Officials from the civic body said that several initiatives have been taken, to ensure that the students were well-prepared for the examination. A zero-hour pep talk session was held before the examination to motivate the students. During the academic year, special classes for students, who required extra coaching, were also conducted.
