The police said the lights, roughly 2,000 watts, in various colours, were used near the stage. The parents and the teachers too complained of pain in the eye.
Though the children had no issues immediately, all of them complained of severe pain on Saturday. Some of them had irritable and watery eyes. Others could not open the eyelid due to swelling, sources said.
The children were taken to a private eye hospital in Tirunelveli. Doctors said immediate medical attention prevented serious issues.
Tirunelveli Collector Sandeep Nanduri visited the hospital and spoke to the children. He said steps would be taken to prevent such incidents in future.
The police were investigating the incident and the school principal might be booked for permitting high-power beams at the function.
