The circular that the State police chief sent sought answers to a series of questions: was the orderly system abolished by a GO in the year 1978; if it has been abolished, how is the system still continuing; how many police persons are employed as orderlies in the residences of serving and retired officers; and why not the government appoint office assistants and servant maids through PWD as done in the case of ministers and high court judges.
In the backdrop of suicides by personnel, the DGP also wanted to know the number of personnel deserted, dismissed, committed suicide and died during service in the last 10 years.
DGP Rajendran directed all commissioners, district superintendents, and officers heading various units to answer the questionnaire by Tuesday evening itself. Sources told DT Next that there more than 6,500 personnel who have been working as orderlies.
Meanwhile, soon after the circular was issued, the WhatsApp groups of police personnel were sharing details of the number of orderlies posted at the houses of senior police officers.
