When DMK working president MK Stalin raised this issue and asked AIADMK MPs to vote against the BJP during the ‘no confidence motion’ in the Parliament, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said, “There is still time, we need to be patient till March 29 and see if the Central government fails to form the CMB and the CWRC, as per SC directive.’

During zero hour, the Leader of Opposition recalled that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and leader of Telugu Desam Party N Chandrababu Naidu set an example by pulling his union ministers out of the NDA and subsequently withdrew his party support for not providing Special Category Status (SCS). “Similarly, the AIADMK, which is the third largest party in the Parliament, should not support BJP when the Opposition parties move the no confidence motion,” he said, adding, DMK welcomed the decision taken by Chandrababu Naidu.

Replying to this, Panneerselvam explained that the Andhra Pradesh issue was different from the Cauvery water sharing dispute. “The Andhra Pradesh government sought allocation of funds and the SCS. This is a different issue. In such a situation, we should not compare our problem with the other state’s. Since we have time till March 29, it is good for us to remain patient. However, we will decide our stand if the Centre does not form the bodies,” he said.

Earlier in February this year, the Supreme Court ruled that Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water would be reduced by 14.75 TMC while asking the Centre to come up with a mechanism within six weeks to implement its order which involved formation of a scheme to oversee sharing of water.
