A large number of police personnel took over the massive grounds to prevent gathering of public to protest over the failure of the Centre to form the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).
The grounds, which usually remain crowded on weekends, wore a deserted look as public weren’t allowed inside. Barricades were put up at entry points and cops maintained tight vigil.
The police also prevented public from parking their vehicles along the stretch adjacent to the grounds. “Public entry into the grounds has been restricted fearing an outbreak of protest over the CMB issue. They will be disallowed from going into the grounds until the situation returns to normalcy,” said a police officer.
In Salem district, security has been beefed up at the Collector office and other places to prevent any mass gathering of people.
Meanwhile, in Coimbatore, around 16 members of Naam Tamilar Katchi held a protest on Sakthy Road near Ganapathy. In Erode, a group of journalists representing various media houses staged a protest at the Superintendent of Police office premises against the Centre.
