Arun Vijay Gandhi, a resident of Thoothukudi, had been continuously posting anti-Sterlite information on Facebook.
In one of his posts, he had claimed that the plant was the reason for several diseases, including cancer. He added that more than 50,000 residents in Thoothukudi were affected by cancer since 1995.
Opposing the post, the company sent a legal notice on Wednesday, which Gandhi received a day later. In the notice, it was mentioned that the FB post was derogatory in nature and contradicted the charitable and social work carried out by it.
According to the notice, the company, which had bagged several international awards, was functioning in Thoothukudi without causing damage to the environment.
The protester has posted the information with an intention to spread hatred among the residents of Thoothukudi against the company employees, the notice stated.
Seeking the removal of the social post in question, the company also demanded that Gandhi tender a public apology within seven days.
