Dhanushkodi island had three sub-temples of the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, prior to the 1964 cyclone, such as the Kothandaramar temple, Jada Theertham Sivan temple and Ganesh temple. In the 1964 cyclone, the Ganesh temple at Kambipadu was damaged extensively.

Officials of the HR&CE department, in the past, had decided to renovate the temple and in 2017, officials from Chennai carried out inspection. They decided to either renovate or rebuild the temple and to conduct the Kumbabishekam. However, no action was taken. A priest attached to the Ramanathaswamy temple said the Ganesh temple has a recorded history of at least 500 years. While many of structures were completely destroyed in the cyclone the Vimana of the temple is still intact. Considering the significance of the temple, the HR&CE Department should either renovate the temple or build a new one at the same spot, they said.
