Kids’ petition leads to road repair
In a rare gesture, Tiruvannamalai Collector KS Kandasamy, who ordered the repair of Karanthai Road near the Vembakkam PU middle school based on a petition from students, inaugurated the work on Monday. The repair of the road will be carried out at a cost of Rs 15.23 lakh.

The collector later went on a bicycle ride along with the students on the stretch.
Speaking to DT Next, Kandaswamy said, “it boosts the confidence of the children and their ability to attempt what is usually considered difficult. The repair work that has started after their petition will give them the hope that they can write to the district’s administrative head about the grievances in their area and get them resolved.”
Similarly, Kandasamy also visited a private school and interacted with students, who wrote to him about the rude behaviour of a conductor of a government bus. He immediately ordered action against the unruly crew and advised the students that they should always express their grievances for immediate redressal. This is not the first time that the Collector is visiting schools and interacting with children.
He frequently visits their schools and praises the students for their social commitment. He even visits their houses and talks to their parents, besides attending sessions on ecology by students in their schools to juniors.
“His actions ensure that the youth learn to stand up for their rights. In a backward district where the position of a collector is considered to be extremely respectful, such interactions give out a strong message to the people that they can easily approach top officials,” said an official on the condition of anonymity.
Though such student-friendly activities of the Kandasamy have earned him appreciation, not everyone in the district is happy with his work ethics. A month ago, he reportedly had a run in with his own staff, which resulted in a female staff sustaining minor injuries.
“It is all a publicity stunt,” said a disgruntled collectorate staff. “In what way does the district benefit by his student-centric activities?” he wondered.
