According to police, Dhanapal (30), vice president (Mettupalayam Town) of Hindu Munnani and working as a manager at a petrol pump, was fast asleep in his residence in Perumal Lay Out when the incident happened. Police said Dhanapal returned from duty past midnight on Thursday and went to sleep after parking his car inside the premises.
“The miscreants hurled a petrol bomb and fled under the cover of darkness. There was no major damage in the attack as just a small portion of the car’s cover was burnt. A bike parked nearby was also damaged slightly,” police said.
The incident came to light only on Friday morning, when Thenmozhi, wife of Dhanapal, came out of the house and found the burnt portion of the car’s cover. She also found a few cigarette butts and matchsticks scattered inside the premises.
On receiving information, a police team led by Coimbatore district Superintendent of Police Pa Murthy visited the spot and held inquiries. Forensic experts and a sniffer dog were pressed into service.
Following the incident, a large number of Hindu outfit members gathered near the Hindu Munnani functionary’s house. They demanded that police enhance vigil to prevent continuing incidents of attacks on Hindu outfit leaders.
The incident comes barely a month after petrol bombs were hurled on a sports utility vehicle of BJP district president C R Nandakumar in Peelamedu area here. The car was destroyed completely. Though blurred images of the miscreants were recorded on a CCTV camera, police are yet to make any headway in the case.
