A top official, confirming the same, however said that it is yet to be decided when he would be arrested. The other sections the actor has been booked under are 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 505(1)(c) (intent to incite any class or community of persons to commit any offence), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
The action has been taken based on a complaint by A Midhar Maideen, state general secretary of Tamil Nadu Journalists Welfare Association, Valasaravakkam. In his complaint, Maideen had stated that Shekher’s sexual remarks against women journalists intend to mock at one of the four pillars of the democracy.
It all started with journalist Lakshmi Subramanian’s objection to Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s act of patting her cheek a few days ago at a press meet in Raj Bhavan in connection with the professor Nirmala Devi row. While she later accepted the Governor’s apology, Shekher posted a statement on Facebook in support of the Governor, in which he said that women cannot become successful journalists without compromising with superiors.
Though he deleted the post within minutes, the screenshot of the same went viral, resulting in journalists raising their ante against him. While he tendered a written apology claiming that the views are not his, several journalists insisted that he should be arrested and staged protests in front of his house. Meanwhile, on Saturday, the actor released a video of himself apologising to women, journalists and state people.
