State will not tolerate any more delay, says Jayakumar

Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar on Saturday stated that his government would strongly oppose any move in the Supreme Court to delay the submission of a draft scheme for implementing the verdict on the Cauvery dispute.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, he said the verdict of the Supreme Court had upheld the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s judgment to form the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee. The Union government had the compulsion to implement the Supreme Court judgment he said and added that the AIADMK is exerting political pressure on the Centre. 

He pointed out that the Supreme Court had already condemned the Centre for delaying the implementation of its verdict and the state would not allow any further delay. The Chief Minister would consult legal experts and take appropriate action to oppose any further delay. 

The Minister’s comments came as farmers, outfits and religious heads commenced their agitations demanding the setting up of the CMB. As the farmers and political outfits are gearing up for a protest on the Marina, the heads of Christian churches held a protest demonstration at Chepauk.

The Bishops, who took part in the agitations, included Roman Catholic arch bishop George Antonysamy, CSI Chennai Bishop George Stephen, ESI Bishop Ezra Sargunam and religious heads of all other denominations. Christian monks, nuns and pastors took part in the protest with slogans demanding Cauvery Management Board.
