The one-man probe panel, appointed by Governor Banwarilal Purohit to investigate the Nirmala Devi scandal, in its third phase of investigation, carried out a probe in the Madurai central prison where Murugan, MKU Assistant Professor and Karuppasamy, former Research Scholar in the university, were questioned regarding the soliciting scandal.

In the morning, Murugan was grilled and in the evening Karuppasamy was questioned. The evening session concluded in just 90 minutes. After the questioning, Santhanam said he was yet to complete the investigation with Karuppasamy and will continue the inquiry in the prison on Friday. He added that based on the investigation with Murugan and Karuppasamy he would enquire other teaching faculty in the MKU.

Santhanam would conclude the third phase of his investigation on Saturday and would return for the fourth phase on May 9. The final phase of investigation would conclude on May 12, as he had sought two weeks extension from the original last date of April 30.

Duo files bail plea

Both Murugan and Karuppasamy filed bail petitions in the Sessions Court at Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district on Thursday. As the earlier bail petition filed by Murugan in the Sathur sub-court was dismissed for since it should have been filed in the Sessions Court, a fresh petition was filed in the Srivilliputhur Court. Similarly, Karuppasamy too filed a bail petition in the court. It would be heard on Friday.
