Based on a complaint by Tirupur north district BJP president R Chinnasamy, the police recently registered a case. The image criticised Modi for failing to constitute the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).
Investigations revealed that it was a fake Facebook account. Police made a request to Facebook to trace the identity of the culprit. Meanwhile, a special team, with the assistance of cyber crime sleuths, reached out to friends of the fake Facebook user and traced the culprit.
The accused, identified as Prabhakaran, 23, hailed from Attur in Salem district. He was working in a private firm at Kuppandampalayam in Tirupur and was staying at SV Colony.
Though Prabhakaran claimed that he uploaded the morphed image unknowingly, the police booked him under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, besides IPC sections 505(1) for spreading rumours and 153(A) for promoting enmity.
He was produced in court and sent on remand until May 18. In a similar incident, police registered a case against an unidentified man for calling up Chinnasamy and hurling abuses at Modi. “A search is on to nab the abusive caller,” police said.
