Sources said the incident took place around 2 pm, when several bank staff had gone for their lunch break. While one gang member was stationed outside, four others including two armed with pistols entered the manager’s cabin and reportedly demanded the locker keys. After the manager told them that he does not have the keys, one of the men fired his pistol. However, none were harmed in the incident. The gang then entered the cashier’s cabin and took away Rs 6 lakh cash and 10 sovereign jewels, which were pledged on the day.
Subsequently, the gang reportedly damaged the CCTV cameras, unplugged the Digital Video Recorder connected to the camera and escaped. There were no customers in the bank as it was during the lunch hours.
The manager soon alerted the police. Based on the information, a police team led by District SP N M Mayilvahanan rushed to the bank and conducted investigation. “We have formed a special team to nab the culprits and they would be caught soon at any cost,” said the SP. DIG (Thanjavur Range) Loganathan also visited the bank.
Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports of police securing two of the gang members, who are now being interrogated.
