Cauvery Dhanapalan, general secretary, Cauvery Delta Farmers Protection Association has declared this suicide attempt protest last Sunday after a discussion meeting with the representatives of various farmers associations for the CMB. Around 500 hundred farmers went on a rally from Avurithidal of Nagapattinam town and reached the Collector’s office.

After that, the farmers’ representatives submitted a petitioned to the Collector. Subsequently, they attempted to go to the sea shore of Nagapattinam to stage a drowning protest.

While they walked towards the beach, the police blocked the farmers. However, adamant farmers continued the rally. Tension prevailed and a mild altercation erupted between the farmers and police following which police arrested 275 persons.

Speaking to reporters, Dhanapalan said, “Cauvery Regulatory Authority is the only solution for this. So, we have tried to stage this suicide attempt protest. But Police prevented us. TN government should talk with the new government of Karnataka and get Cauvery water as per the SC’s direction.”

Dhanapalan further condemned the state government for not issuing the crop claim of 2016-2017 and he also urged the state to disburse the crop claim for the recent damage occurred in the current 20172018 period.
