Rameswaram is among the most famous tourist destinations in the country. A large number of tourists and devotees visit the island regularly. It has various tourist spots and the recently laid road to Dhanushkodi is one of the key reasons for increasing tourism-related activities. Rameswaram no longer remains just a spiritual or tourism centre but has also blossomed into a centre for sea games.
Kundukal beach has favourable climatic conditions for kitesurfing and a large number of international surfers have started visiting the beach in recent times. The surfing season usually starts from the end of May, corresponding roughly with the onset of the Southwest monsoon and ends with the onset of the Northeast monsoon.
This year, the season began this week and initially a surfer, Oliver, from France, reached Kundukal and started practicing surfing in the sea. He said Rameswaram is the only favourable spot for kitesurfing in the eastern coast of the country due to appropriate height of waves and absence of wind.
Rizwan, an instructor in kitesurfing from Bengaluru, is staying in Pamban to train the surfers. He said surfers from Sri Lanka, South Africa, Spain and France reach Kundukal every year between May and October to train.
During the Southwest monsoon season, the sea would be gentle in Kundukal and the waves would be just right for surfing.
Wind is another factor which is crucial for kitesurfing and in Kundukal there is only minimal wind. The season has commenced and surfers would reach Kundukal soon, said Rizwan.
