According to Food Safety Officer Selvaraj Duraiswami, the department has been conducting surprise raids as the mango season is now under way. On Monday, a team of officials raided the premises of a trader in Gandhi Market. They found that the fruits were artificially ripened using carbide stones.

“Although we had conducted 25 inspections in the market during the current mango season, the present seizure was the massive one. Since the vendor was caught for the first time, we issued a warning and all the chemically ripened mangoes were seized,” the official added.
