State files caveat in apex court to safeguard the state’s order to permanently shut down Sterlite plant
When the Assembly is being rocked by heated debates over Sterlite plant’s permanent closure, the state has filed a caveat petition in the Supreme Court to safeguard the state’s order to permanently shut down the plant after 13 persons were killed in a police firing on anti-Sterlite protesters.

Sources said the state has geared up for the imminent legal tussle which the Vedanta group may initiate in the apex court soon.
Sources said filing a caveat would serve as a precautionary measure to prevent the apex court from passing any orders without first hearing the version of the state.
“It would give us opportunity to advance our arguments and defend our decision which was arrived at following detailed deliberations with cabinet ministers, senior bureaucrats and legal advisors,” the source said.
As per the lock and seal order, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has not renewed the consent to operate for Sterlite in its order dated April 9, 2018. The closure of the plant is required in the ‘larger public interest,’ it said.
