Students plant saplings on Environment Day
World Environment Day was celebrated on Tuesday with various events such as cleaning of plastic wastes, planting saplings, awareness rallies on environment at various places in the southern districts. World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5.

In Thoothukudi, Indian Coast Guard(ICG) personnel along with school students were involved in cleaning the VOC Port Trust beach in Thoothukudi. DIG Venkatesh, Station Officer, ICG(Thoothukudi), explained to students the harmful effects of plastics and inaugurated the beach cleaning drive.
After an hour, students collected loads of plastic wastes left over by the tourists and fishermen at the beach. Similarly, in Uthupatti village near Kovilpatti, in Thoothukudi district, a cleaning and tree plantation drive was organised by Forest Department in association with green activists like Muthumurugan, from Kovilpatti.
More than 300 school students from Nadar Middle School in Kovilpatti and Government Higher Secondary School in Uthupatti participated in the programmes. They took a pledge to avoid plastics and to plant at least one sapling a month. They also took the pledge to spread awareness among their friends and families about the importance of protecting environment and then participated in an awareness rally carrying placards around the village.
Then they were involved in removing plastic wastes from the village. In Madurai, an awareness rally participated by school students was flagged off by Collector, K.Veera Raghav Rao. The rally commenced from Gandhi Museum and went through all the important roads in Madurai.
