What was more shocking was that the incident happened close to the newly inaugurated CBI office where a large number of policemen were deployed, though none came forward to save him.
The man identified as ‘Panni’ Karthick was a serial offender and retained jewels looted by burglars, according to sources. Recently, he was involved in the murder of gangster Dinesh at Kanchipuram, though his name was not included in the FIR.
The younger brother of Dinesh, Saravanan, in a bid to avenge his brother’s murder hacked Karthick twice.
Then the gang tried to throw a stone at Karthick though he managed to escape in his bike and reached the CBI office that was inaugurated on Thursday.
For the inauguration, top officials of the CBI were present and so heavy police protection was given.
On seeing the policemen, Karthick ran towards them to escape the gang but the policemen did not try to save him, though he was bleeding profusely.
The police officers did not even call the ambulance and asked him to visit a hospital nearby. When he went to the hospital on his own, he was refused treatment. Following it, he stayed on the road for 15 minutes and called his cousin.
When his cousin reached the spot and tried to take him to hospital, policemen arranged an auto for him and he was taken to the GRH. After the CBI officials left the spot, Tallakulam Police Inspector Bethuraj commenced an investigation and booked an attempt murder case.
A higher official of the Madurai City Police, on request of anonymity, said that he was not aware of the incident.
